Jewelry by 77 international artists, inspired by role models of their choice, reviving the tradition of the châtelaine -- the waist-hung ornament with appendages.
Exhibition curator Helen Drutt English invited artists from four continents to select a role model as a stimulus for creating new works based on the châtelaine-- the ornament, usually fastened to belt or pocket -- that is historically associated with the women who kept the keys to the castle or manor.
The result is Challenging the Châtelaine!, an exhibition of more than seventy internationally celebrated artists. making its only United States appearance at the Philadelphia Art Alliance, after stops across Europe, including the Lalaounis Jewelry Museum, Athens, the Design Museum, Ghent, and the Künstlerhaus, Vienna.
Role models who inspired exhibition artists include writers, singers, actors, and designers. politicians, royalty, scientists, culinary artists, and engineers. or family members. From works dedicated to Eva Peron to John James Audobon, from Leornard Cohen to Leonardo da Vinci, Julia Child to Cinderella, the tradition of the châtelaine continues.//Next on March 18,19 & 20 at 11am
